Vincent Dombrowski (*1994) is a versatile German improvising artist, composer, producer, and bandleader. Born and raised in Northern Germany, he began playing saxophone at the age of twelve. His musical journey started in a symphonic wind orchestra and quickly evolved as he studied with renowned musicians such as Hans-Malte Witte, Sebastian Gille, and Prof. Martin Claassen.
From 2010 to 2016, Vincent was a member of the Lower Saxony State Youth Jazz Orchestra, touring extensively across Germany, Russia, and China and collaborating with artists like Nils Wogram, Niels Klein, and Stefan Schultze.
In 2013, Vincent began his studies in jazz saxophone and pedagogy at the Institute for Music in Osnabrück. During this time, he honed his craft with esteemed educators like Tineke Postma, Pablo Held, and Frederik Köster. He also founded the “Nordsnø Ensemble,” which has since released several concept albums and received the “Jazz Hoch im Kurs” award.
From 2015 to 2019, he studied jazz saxophone and flute at the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre under Prof. Fiete Felsch and Gabriel Coburger, graduating in 2021 with an outstanding grade of 1.16. During this period, he joined the Hamburg Youth Jazz Orchestra, touring Switzerland and Italy. In 2019, he started studying a master in composition with Prof. Wolf Kerschek.
Vincent’s passion for creative music extends beyond performance. He co-organized the “Jazzkitchen Hamburg” and the multi-disciplinary concert series „Mycelium – rethinking jazz. and became a board member of the Jazz Federation Hamburg. In 2020, he founded the “Birdland Bigband,” which performs monthly at the renowned Birdland Jazz Club in Hamburg.
In addition to his roles as a bandleader and composer, Vincent is deeply involved in interdisciplinary projects. He co-composed the music and performed in the dance performance “Ungeheuer” and the VR installation “AGENTS.” He is also the producer of the Hamburg Open Online University project “microtonal saxophone,” conducting interviews with leading saxophonists such as Hayden Chisholm and Frank Gratkowski.
As a sideman, Vincent has played in ensembles including the Michel Schroeder Ensemble, Slideprojection, Niklas Werk Quintet, Bentō, and the Jazzkombinat Hamburg. His compositions have been performed by the NDR Bigband, Jens Wawrczek, the Nordsnø Ensemble, and more. His collaborations include projects with artists like Evan Parker, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Satoko Fuji, Nils Wogram, Norma Winston, Kit Downes, Christopher Dell, Jens Wawrczek and the NDR Bigband.
Vincent’s discography features numerous acclaimed releases, such as the celebrated album “flow regulator” (2023) and “ett omaka par” (2024) with the Nordsnø Ensemble. Currently, he is focused on producing a new album for the band “Lashless Lid” and further developing his ensembles “flow regulator” and “Andrew’s Singing Crane.”
Through his ensembles and compositions, Vincent Dombrowski actively shapes the contemporary improvisational music scene, blending musical innovation with a deep connection to the genre.
